1937: Cannabis was banned due to federal prohibition

1978: Cannabis was partially decriminalized for minor amounts and paraphernalia possession

2014: Harper Grace’s Law or House Bill 1231 was passed by the state legislature to legalize low-THC CBD for certain conditions

2020: The Medical Marijuana campaign gathered 228,000 signatures to place Initiative 65 on the ballot to legalize two and a half ounces of cannabis every two weeks for medical patients.

To legalize medical cannabis, it would have to be from a state-licensed treatment center, and there is a fine for public use.

2021: the Mississippi State Supreme Court invalidated Initiative 65 from legalizing medical marijuana based on a minor technicality in the state initiative law.

2022: Governor Tate Reeves signed the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act into law to legalize medical marijuana on Feb. 2, 2022. Per the new Medical Cannabis Law and the Mississippi Department of Health, the medical program should be fully functional for cannabis patients later in the year. The Marijuana Policy Project is currently working on a legalization initiative for recreational use in Mississippi.
